Indian Caverns is known the world over as one of the most interesting and educational places to visit, and families from all over the state, country, and even the world are amazed at the natural beauty and historic content that we are proud to offer. However, like most things, Indian Caverns has a dark past that has just recently resurfaced. Though tucked away and not talked about for years, recent home movie footage and local news stories have brought back the tale of "Tom."
In June 1966, 19-year-old young man named Tom was hired as one of four tour guides for Indian Caverns. How could anyone know the evil that resided in his psyche?
In August, a family from Bellefonte went missing. Authorities believe they were Tom’s first victims - disappearing from inside the cave during a tour, their bodies hidden in one of its many secret rooms.
It wasn't until 1972 that police were able to determine Tom’s involvement with multiple disappearances over the years. When they went to Indian Caverns to question him, he ran into the caves. Even though hot on his trail, the police weren't able to find him within the maze of caves...he was never found. Eventually, a large room was uncovered where the remains of at least 27 people were strewn about, as well as undeveloped film from photographic and movie cameras that have recently been developed and made public.
Guides working at Indian Caverns today say they can sometimes hear a man's voice inside the caves giving what sounds like a tour and sometimes they hear the screams of frightened tourists as they meet their deaths.
Are you willing to brave the caves where restless spirits roam and where the evil spirit of Tom could make you his next victim?
